FORT COLLINS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels moved up to fifth place after the completion of the third day of the 2011 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo. UNLV has tallied 38 points overall with 35 of those added today alone. The Rebel hammer throwers were responsible for 24 of those 35, as four performers finished in the top seven, including Amanda Bingson's and Chelsea Cassulo's 1-2 finish in the event.
Bingson racked up 14 points as an individual for her team, as she finished first in the hammer throw (10 points) and fifth in the discus (four points). Her hammer throw of 228-6 (69.65m) was the third-best in the NCAA this season and also ranks second in the MWC outdoor championship history behind CSU's Loree Smith, who recorded a distance of 229-9 in 2005. Bingson becomes the second student-athlete to earn back-to-back hammer titles since Smith did so in 2004 and '05. She also owns three of the top five best throws all-time in MWC outdoor history.
Bingson followed up her top showing in the hammer with a fifth-place throw of 151-2 (46.08m) in the discus.
Chelsea Cassulo finished second in the hammer with a throw of 210-9 (64.24m). Danielle Rios and Brittney Harvey finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the event with distances of 182-8 (55.69m) and 174-9 (53.26m).
Ashley Henry came in fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5-7 (1.70m).
Emily Blok ran the second-best qualifying times in the 100m (11.66) and the 200m (23.62) to advance to Saturday's finals in both events.
Also, qualifying in their respective events were Kelsey Williamson, Ali Bartosch and Christine Lowe. Williamson ran the third-fastest time in the 400m (54.50), Bartosch was sixth-best in the 800m (2:10.92) and Lowe was eighth in the 400m hurdles (61.47).
