RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 7-over-par 295 on Thursday and is in a two-way tie for sixth place at the 2011 NCAA Men's Golf San Diego Regional, which is being played at The Farms Golf Club (par 72, 6,903 yards).

USC shot 10-under 278 and leads the field by nine shots. UCLA and Texas are tied for second at 1-under 287, while North Texas and San Diego are in fourth- and fifth-place at 5- and 6-over, respectively. UNLV is tied with SMU, just a shot out of fifth place.

USC's Jeffrey Kang shot 6-under 66 and leads all individuals by two shots. Texas' Dylan Frittelli and USC's Steve Lim are tied for second at 4-under, while UNLV junior Derek Ernst is tied for fourth with UCLA's Patrick Cantlay and San Francisco's Mat Miller at 3-under.

Ernst had five birdies and two bogeys on the day.

Other Rebel players: sophomore Kevin Penner is tied for 16th at even par (72), freshman Blake Biddle is tied for 30th at 2-over (74), freshman Nicholas Maruri is tied for 64th at 8-over (80) and Colby Smith is 75th at 15-over (87).

The low five teams and low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship finals.

The NCAA Regionals are made up of six 54-hole tournaments that are being conducted to determine the 30 qualifying teams and six individuals not on those qualifying teams who will advance to the finals. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams are competing at each of three regionals, including San Diego, while the other three regionals have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams.

The tournament will continue with 18 holes on Friday and conclude with another 18 holes on Saturday. UNLV is slated to begin the second round off the No. 10 hole with tee times scheduled every 10 minutes from 8:00-8:40 a.m. Live stats are available courtesy of Golfstat through a link on UNLVRebels.com.
