Stanback's Suspension Announced

Sept. 22, 2011

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Men's Basketball Head Coach Dave Rice has announced that senior forward Chace Stanbackwill be suspended from the Runnin' Rebels' first regular-season game on Nov. 11. The suspension will also include Stanback missing UNLV's lone exhibition game on Nov. 1.

Stanback pleaded guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence of marijuana in court earlier today. He was ordered to pay a fine of $585, perform 40 hours of community service, attend DUI school and take part in a victim impact panel.

Stanback was arrested on suspicion of DUI in May. Per toxicology reports, Stanback tested positive for marijuana. No alcohol was detected in his system.

"I regret the decision that I made and I apologize to everyone who cares about UNLV and Runnin' Rebel basketball," Stanback said. "I made a terrible mistake. I have learned a lot about myself through this process and I hope people are willing to forgive me."

"Chace is a quality person who has had an outstanding track record in three-plus years at UNLV," Rice said. "That said, he made a bad decision that negatively impacted our program. We can't have that."

Stanback joined the Runnin' Rebel program in Fall 2008. This is his first violation of the athletics' department's Drug Prevention, Education, Testing and Treatment Program. First-time violators are not subject to suspensions from any practices or games, but are required to complete mandatory education and counseling programs, and the student-athlete is required to submit to further random drug tests.

"This is a case of a young man who has been a fine representative of our athletics department over the years, but made a bad decision," UNLV Director of Athletics Jim Livengood said. "I support Coach Rice's decision about the punishment for the arrest. We're all disappointed in Chace's decision, but he knows we are here to help him grow from this. We believe that Chace is the type of individual who will learn and grow from this experience."
