LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 61st-ranked UNLV men's tennis team opened its dual-match season with a closer-than-it sounds 6-1 loss at No. 40 UC Irvine Thursday afternoon at Anteater Stadium.
The Rebels dropped a tight doubles point to open the day. UNLV won on the third court when Willie Sublette and Tamas Batyi got by Sam Gould and Jon Kazarian 9-8. However, UCI won 8-6 at the second position and rallied from a 5-0 deficit on court one to win 8-5.
Moving to singles, the visitors tied it up with a 6-3, 6-3 victory by Alex Bull over Ryan Cheung on court three. The `Eaters, however, got two more quick points with wins at spots one and five. UNLV players took the first set on the other three matches but ultimately were defeated in all of them.
UNLV will stay in Southern California and take on top-ranked USC on Saturday in the first round of the annual ITA Kickoff Weekend.
