LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field program opened up its 2011 indoor slate this weekend and witnessed Amanda Bingson and Ashley Henry record top finishes in the weight throw and high jump, respectively, at Northern Arizona's Mountain T's Invitational. Bingson, who is no stranger to UNLV's record book, recorded the program's best weight throw with a toss of 66-6.50 (20.28m), which outdistanced the previous mark by nearly 1.5 feet. Henry topped all high jumpers with an effort of 5-8.75 (1.75m).
"This was a very good opener for the team," said head coach Yvonne Scott-Wade. We had numerous personal bests, and we competed well. There are still many things that we must work on, but overall it was a good start to the season."
On the track, UNLV recorded some good marks from many individuals. The Rebels had a quartet place in the top seven in the 60m led by third-place Emily Blok (7.56). Zadia Bryant was fourth (7.65 PB), while Uchechi Anunkor (7.67) and Secoral Yanez (7.77 PB) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Yanez and Anunkor also placed in the 200m with the former claiming a second-place finish (24.62 PB), while the latter was seventh (25.27).
Anunkor, Blok and Yanez teamed up with Lindsay Roach in the 4x400m relay and placed third overall with a time of 3:52.25. The "B" relay team of Rhea Hill, Bryant, Erin Morris and Paige Holly was sixth (4:09.12), while the "C" squad of Erin Straughter, Ashley Franklin, Olivia Hudson and Noela Estrada finished eighth (4:13.76).
Morris finished sixth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.74.
In the field, Danielle Rios finished third behind Bingson's weight throw mark with a personal-best distance of her own, 60-11.50 (18.58m). Adrianna Oliva finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of 41-5.00 (12.62m).
Deja Edwards finished first and third, respectively, in the long jump and triple jump. Edwards leapt a distance of 18-7.25 (5.67m) in the former event and 37-11.50 (11.57m) in the latter. Ria Daniels joined Edwards in the top eight in the long jump with an eighth-place finish (17-6.75 / 5.35m PB). Bryant finished fourth in the triple jump (36-10.50 / 11.24m PB), while Olivia Hudson was sixth in the event (36-8.25 / 11.18m PB).
Stephanie Schafer and Myra Dean also competed in the high jump alongside Henry, and both jumped 5-1.00 (1.55). Schafer was sixth, while Dean was seventh with her personal-best jump.
In Seattle, a small contingent of Rebels participated at Washington's UW Invitational. The distance medley relay team of Ali Bartosch, Christine Lowe, Kelsey Williamson and Laura Affeld finished first in their sectional and fifth overall with a final time of 12:02.19. Three of those four (Lowe, Zorich and Williamson) partnered with Corey Honeycutt for a third-place finish in the 4x400m relay (3:52.44).
Individually, Williamson (2:10.93), Zorich (2:12.69) and Affeld (2:15.96) also competed in the 800m race and set personal-best times in the distance.
Lowe finished third in the 400m race with a time of 56.57.
The Rebels return to indoor action next Saturday, Feb. 4, in Albuquerque at the New Mexico Challenge.
