2012 NAU Invite Results
The UNLV track & field team participated in the NAU Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz., Saturday. The squad was in familiar territory, as they opened up the 2012 indoor season in the same stadium two weeks ago at the Mountain T's Invitational. Today, the Rebels picked up wins in seven events, one of which re-wrote the program's record in the weight throw.
Just two weeks ago, Amanda Bingson tossed the old weight throw record out the window. On Saturday, she went well beyond her original record-setter of 66-6.50 with a weight toss that measured 70-3.50 (21.42m). She bested herself by three feet and seven inches. More importantly, the throw met 2012 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships automatic qualifying standards, which for the weight throw is set at 21.00 meters.
"The team competed very well this weekend and made a lot of improvements showing that they are ready to go for the Mountain West Championships," said head coach Yvonne Scott-Wade. "We have two weeks to get them mentally and physically prepared, and we should perform very well."
Besides Bingson's win, the Rebels got some personal-best outings from Emily Blok in the 60m (7.46) and Erin Morris in the 60m hurdles (8.54). Brett Zorich won the 800m in a time of 2:13.59, while Ashley Henry topped all high jumpers with a leap of 5-5.75 (1.67m).
Kelsey Williamson ran her first 400m of the season and finished in second place in a time of 55.75. Williamson also ran the final leg of the 4x400m relay that crossed the finish line first in 3:45.36. She partnered with Christine Lowe, Blok and Zorich for the win.
The Rebels had four more participants finish second, as well. Secoral Yanez ran the 200m in 24.37. Laura Affeld followed closely behind Zorich in the 800m with a second-place effort of 2:14.67. Deja Edwards and Olivia Hudson both finished second in the long jump (18-7.25/5.67m) and triple jump (36-9.75/11.22m), respectively.
The Rebels return to action on Feb. 23-25 in Albuquerque for the 2012 MW Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
