Bingson Hammers Away New NCAA Meet Record

May 26, 2012

AUSTIN (UNLVRebels.com) - Amanda Bingson's first throw (228-02/69.57m) at Saturday's 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Preliminary Championship, held at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas, would have been good enough to advance her to the national meet in two weeks, but she one-upped herself in her third effort. Bingson unleashed a new NCAA meet record toss of 233-1 (71.04m), which guarantees her a spot in the national meet scheduled for June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Bingson, who has now broken the UNLV track & field program's hammer throw record eight times, advanced to last year's NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship as the top-seed. The throw was also the best-ever by a Mountain West student-athlete since the conference's inaugural year in 2000.

Brett Zorich will travel to the Hawkeye State with Bingson, and she will compete in the 800m after running a personal-best time of 2:05.39 on Friday night.

The 4x400m relay team also competed on Saturday and finished 15th overall, three spots shy of advancing. The quartet of Christine Lowe, Brett Zorich, Secoral Yanez and Kelsey Williamson clocked a time of 3:38.54.
