Results

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Playing on a dry but cold and windy Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex, the UNLV men's tennis team fought off Northern Arizona 5-2.

The Rebels improved to 2-0 while the Lumberjacks fell to 1-1.

UNLV began by winning both completed doubles matches for one team point. Bernard Schoeman and Ace Matias downed Robert Martin and Shaun Waters 8-2 at the top spot while Johannes Markel and Tamas Batyi got by Pat Schimmelbauer and Dominic Bermudez 8-5 at No. 2. The other match was then halted.

Moving to singles play, all six matches were decided in straight sets and the hosts won four of them. Matias downed Schimmelbauer 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2; Schoeman defeated Sarp Laleli 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4; Markel defeated Kester Black 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5; and Carlos Di Laura got his first win as a Rebel, 6-4, 6-2, over Robert Martin on court six.

Next up, the Rebels host Southern Mississippi on Friday beginning with doubles play at 10 a.m. Admission to all UNLV matches is free of charge.
