Chandler, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's golfer Avery French is tied for 10th place at the 2013 Joanne Winter Arizona Silver Belle Championship, which is being played at the Whirlwind Golf Club (par-72, 6,195 yards). French shot a 1-under-par 71 in the first round and heads into the second round five strokes off the lead.
Current prepster and Arizona signee Krystal Quinhuis leads the field after shooting a 6-under 66 in the first round and holds a one-stroke lead over Arizona State freshman Mikayla Harmon.
French sunk five birdies on the day, four of which on the front nine, and sits tenth with six others. Her five birdies were tied for the fourth most in the first round. The Rebel freshman will tee off at 9:40 MT and fans can follow the action at http://tpp.ghin.com/Club/Scoring/ResultsStroke.aspx?id=7191
The tournament is also broken up into four different age groups and French sits alone in fourth place amongst the collegiate golfers.
The 43rd annual Joanne Winter Arizona Silver Belle Championship consists of 110 players ranging in age from 13 to 23 and includes many of the top collegiate women's golfers. The prestigious tournament will continue with second round action on Sunday and the third and final round will be played on Monday after the field is cut down to the low 70 scores. The cut line is a new wrinkle to the longstanding tournament and will include at least half of the players in each of the age groups.
French and the Rebels open their spring season on February 15 at the Peg Barnhard Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
