Feb. 6, 2013

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV tennis sophomore Ace Matias was named Mountain West Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. It marked the first such honor for a Rebel men's player in 2013.

Playing at the No. 1 position in the lineup, the native of Torrance, Calif., went a combined 6-0 last weekend in singles and doubles while leading the Rebels to victories over Southern Miss, New Mexico State and UC Riverside.

A transfer from Utah, Matias defeated Matt Frost of USM, 7-6, 6-4, Luis Ramirez of NMSU, 6-2, 6-1, and Jimmy Roberts of UCR, 6-1, 6-2. In doubles play, Matias and partner Bernard Schoeman upset 60th-ranked Frost and Andrew Goodwin of the Golden Eagles, 8-6, then topped Aggies Luis Ramirez and Marc Westgate, 8-2, and Highlanders Kevin Griffin and Marcus Vizcarra, 8-1.

The Rebels (5-0) are off until traveling to face former league-rival BYU February 15.
