LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Fresh off earning its first national ranking of the season, the No. 68 UNLV men's tennis team won its sixth consecutive home match by downing Ball State 5-2 Thursday.
Playing at the Fertitta Tennis Complex for the first time since February 3, the Rebels improved to 7-4 overall while the Cardinals dropped to 6-6.
UNLV won the doubles point for the first time in six matches, taking all three courts to carve out a 1-0 lead. Ace Matias and Bernard Schoeman downed Ray Leonard and Dalton Albertin 8-1 at the top spot; Tamas Batyi and Johannes Markel got by Patrick Elliott and Cliff Morrison 8-6 at No. 2; and Carlos Di Laura and Charlie Alvarado won 8-4 over Imanol Arconada and Austin Sansone 8-4 on court three.
In singles, Matias rallied to down Leonard, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, at the first position to improve to 14-6 on the season. Batyi defeated Morrison, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2; Gilad Berman swept Albertin 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3; and Markel won his match over Austin Smith on court six, 6-2, 6-3.
"We had good energy in doubles and the guys fought hard in singles against an always-tough opponent," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "We are looking forward to another tough one tomorrow."
UNLV hosts Air Force on Friday starting with doubles play at 2 p.m., weather permitting. The match will be the first of two vs. the Falcons this season but will not count toward the Mountain West standings.
