April 3, 2013

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV tennis sophomore Ace Matias was named Mountain West Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league announced Wednesday.

Playing at the No. 1 position in the lineup, the native of Torrance, Calif., went a combined 9-1 last weekend in singles and doubles while leading the Rebels to a 4-1 mark. He also won the award February 6.

A transfer from Utah, Matias improved to 20-7 on the season in singles with four wins, including an upset of 97th-ranked Derek Siddiqui of San Diego State on Sunday. His only loss of the week came against the nation's 22nd-ranked player from Cal Poly. Matias also teamed with Bernard Schoeman to post a perfect 5-0 in doubles action while playing at the top of the lineup. The duo improved to 18-7 overall this season.

The Rebels (13-5) will play their first Mountain West road match of the spring when they take on New Mexico Friday at 12 p.m. PT.
