LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 25 UNLV men's golf team will open its 2013-14 season on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Pebble Beach in Calif., at the Carmel Cup, which is a four-team two-day tournament combining stroke and match play. Arizona, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt are the other teams competing in the event this weekend.
The practice round is being held today (Friday, Sept. 6) at Spyglass Hill Golf Course (par 72, 6,960 yards). Saturday's rounds will be stroke play (six counting five) with the morning round being held at Pebble Beach Golf Links (par 72, 7,040 yards) and the afternoon being played at Spyglass Hill.
The top two teams after Saturday's rounds will square off in match play on Sunday at Pebble Beach, with the bottom two teams playing against each other for third place.
Filling out the UNLV lineup this weekend will be sophomore AJ McInerney, junior Carl Jonson, junior Kurt Kitayama, freshman Taylor Montgomery, freshman Chris Tuulik and sophomore Zane Thomas. Four of the Rebels competing this weekend return from UNLV's 2012-13 roster, while Montgomery and Tuulik are the newcomers.
UNLV is entering its 27th season under head coach Dwaine Knight and returns six letterwinners overall from last season's team. The Rebels are coming off an "Elite Eight" appearance at the NCAA Championship, which was played in June. Their season ended in a sudden-death playoff that came down to one hole against Georgia Tech.
Last year was the first time that UNLV advanced to the match play portion of the NCAA Championship (current format was introduced in 2009). The 2013 NCAA finals were UNLV's 18th all-time appearance and marked its 25th straight NCAA Regional appearance, which is the record for most consecutive years qualifying for NCAA postseason play.
UNLV has recorded 10 top-eight finishes at the NCAA Championship in its history, which includes a national title and a runner-up finish.
There will be no live online scoring from this weekend's Carmel Cup, however a full recap of the action may be found on UNLVRebels.com following each day of competition.
