Nov. 20, 2014

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball received nine signed national letters of intent from student-athletes who will be eligible for the 2015-16 season, head coach Tim Chambers announced Thursday.

"Overall it is a really great recruiting class that we are super happy with," Chambers said. "We are getting these kids because of the success we have had on the field and the hard work our coaches put in on the recruiting trail. We can't wait to get them on campus next fall."

The class consists of four pitchers (three right-handers and one left-hander), an outfielder, three infielders and a catcher. The class includes Nick Ames (1B/3B), Tevita Gerber (LHP), Kyle Isbel (SS/2B), Dean Kremer (RHP), Sam Pastrone (RHP), Austin Pritchard (1B/OF), Larry Quaney III (RHP), Max Smith (OF/P) and Vince Taormina (C).

Nick Ames is a first baseman from Tucson, Ariz. who attends Canyon Del Oro High School. He garnered all-state first team honors as a sophomore and a junior. His sophomore year, Ames was named the 2013 Offensive MVP as he hit .420 with nine home runs. Perfect Game ranks him as the No. 44 player in Arizona. He is high school teammates will fellow UNLV signee Max Smith.

"I chose to sign with UNLV because the first time I was on campus I felt like I was at home," Ames said. "I love everything UNLV has to offer including the great coaching staff. I am very excited to be a Rebel."

Tevita Gerber is a left-handed pitcher from Salt Lake City, Utah who attends Cottonwood High School. He is a two-sport athlete for the Colts, playing both football and baseball. Gerber is a three-year letter winner on the baseball team and led the team with 65 strikeouts in 49 innings of work. He finished the season with an ERA of 1.71 and a WHIP of 1.27 and earned first team all-region honors. Gerber was also the starting quarterback for the Colts, but elected to not play his senior season in order to concentrate on baseball.

"I chose UNLV because it felt right," Gerber said. "From the day I met Coach Chambers and the rest of the coaching staff, things clicked and I felt extremely comfortable there. While he was showing me around the campus everything felt right and I could really picture myself going to UNLV. It's a great atmosphere and I can't wait to start."

Kyle Isbel is a middle infielder from Fontana, Calif. who attends Etiwanda High School. He is a three-year letterwinner and earned all-league honors as a junior and sophomore after hitting .362 and .319, respectively. He earned the 2014 Greg Dobbs Award (hitter of the year) and the 2014 Xavier Paul Award (player of the year) while playing travel on his travel team, ABD Academy. Perfect Game lists him as the No. 255 prospect in the state.

"I chose UNLV because the staff made me feel like I was at home," Isbel said. "It's a great program and I'm looking forward to being a Rebel."

Dean Kremer is the lone junior college transfer in the class and is one of the top right-handed JC pitchers in California. He redshirted last season at Delta College and will have three years of eligibility remaining when he gets to UNLV. He pitches at 88-91 miles per hour and has three solid pitches.

"After visiting the campus and talking with the players, coaches and academic advisor I felt that UNLV would be a perfect fit." Kremer said. "I am excited by the vision and direction of the baseball program."

Sam Pastrone is a right-handed pitcher from Las Vegas who attends Arbor View High School. He was named to the All Southern-Nevada Second Team, All-Sunset Region First Team and earned Arbor View's Pitcher of the Year honors as a junior. He also played in the 2014 Area Code Games. He ranks as the No. 272 prospect in the country and No. 4 in Nevada, according to Perfect Game.

"Since attending my first UNLV camp when I was nine years old I have always wanted to be a Rebel," Pastrone said. "I was happily surprised to receive offers from Oregon, San Diego and Utah, but after thoughtful consideration I decided to sign with UNLV. I am looking forward to playing for the Rebels and helping the team get to the College World Series."

Austin Pritchard is a first baseman from Riverside, Calif. and attends John W. North High School. Ranks as the No. 183 prospect out of California by Perfect Game. He was a USA Baseball National Team NTIS Selection for the Southern California team. Pritchard also earned a 2014 under class honorable mention from Perfect Game.

"I chose UNLV because the coaches seemed like a perfect fit for me and my skills," Pritchard said. "The guys on the team view the game as fun instead of work."

Larry Quaney III is a right-handed pitcher from Las Vegas who attends Cimarron-Memorial High School. He earned first team all-state, all-district and all-conference honors as a junior. He also played for the Ohio Warhawks in 2014 and helped them to a 52-2 overall record and a national championship.

"I choose UNLV for a few reasons," Quaney III said. "I love the coaching staff and the direction that they are heading. They are going to be a national powerhouse in the upcoming years. I have lots off family that went to UNLV and this is where I was born and raised. With all of my family in Las Vegas, I want them to see me play every chance I get. The main goal I have is to win a College World Series while I'm pitching at UNLV."

Max Smith is an outfielder/pitcher from Tucson, Ariz. who attends Canyon Del Oro High School. He is a two-sport standout, earning all-section first team honors as a running back in football and all-section first team honors for baseball. He is high school teammates will fellow UNLV signee Nick Ames.

"I chose UNLV because of the great coaching staff and the atmosphere," Smith said. "Coach Chambers has a history of building successful programs and I am excited to be a part of his team. I am very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the UNLV baseball program."
