MALIBU, Calif. - The 60th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team was already short-handed without the services of its number two player but then also ran into a surging Pepperdine squad in a 6-1 defeat Friday at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.

The 39th-ranked Waves improved their record to 3-1 while the Lady Rebels fell to 3-3.

Pepperdine quickly won two doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead.

Things were no easier in singles play as UNLV's only point came on court six where freshman Paola Artiga swept Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai 6-3, 6-1. In a battle of ranked players at the top of the lineup, No. 23 Lorraine Guillermo downed Rebel senior Lucia Batta 6-1, 6-4.

Next up, UNLV will stay in Malibu and face No. 25 Arizona State on Sunday at noon.
