LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team nearly knocked off No. 53 San Diego State before falling 4-3 in a Sunday Mountain West Conference meeting at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels dropped to 4-2 on the year while the Aztecs improved to 5-2.
SDSU took a 1-0 lead by sweeping three doubles matches.
In singles, however, the Rebels won the top three matches in the lineup. Ace Matias downed Thorsten Bertsch 6-3, 6-4 at the top spot; Tamas Batyi defeated Hunter Nicholas 6-5 (7-6), 6-4 at No. 2; and Denys Pume rallied to upset 124th-ranked Freddy Gelbrich 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 on court three.
"Tough loss today against a solid, well-coached team." UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "We are looking forward to our road trip to Oregon next weekend."
Next up, UNLV will travel to Eugene, Ore., to face Portland on Saturday and Oregon on Sunday.
