John A. Burns Intercollegiate Results
LIHUE, Hawaii (UNLVRebels.com) - The final round of the 38th Annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which was scheduled for Friday, was cancelled because of inclement weather. The Rebels, who played three freshmen in their first outing of the spring season, finished in a tie for eighth place.
The tournament, which was shortened to 36 holes, was played at Wailua Golf Course (par 72, 6,991 yards) on the island of Kauai.
Prior to the final round starting, Kauai was under a flash flood warning. When it was determined that another band of thunderstorms was approaching and in consideration of the competing teams travel plans, the final round was cancelled.
No. 2-ranked California won the tournament for the fourth straight year with a score of 16-under 560. No. 37 BYU and No. 6 Texas A&M both tied for second at 7-under, while No. 15 New Mexico finished fourth at 1-over. UTEP and Arizona both tied for fifth at 4-over.
The No. 28 Rebels tied with Long Beach State for eighth at 8-over 584.
BYU's Justin Keiley earned medalist honors, finishing at 10-under 134. He beat out Joel Stalter from California - the 2013 individual medalist - by four shots.
UNLV junior Carl Jonson was the top Rebel finisher as he tied for 14th at 1-under 143. Junior Kurt Kitayama tied for 18th at even-par 144, freshman Taylor Montgomery tied for 23rd at 1-over 145, freshman Redford Bobbitt tied for 70th at 8-over 152 and freshman Chris Tuuliktied for 74th at 9-over 153.
The tournament featured 17 teams and 90-individuals.
UNLV will be back in action March 7-9, as it hosts the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas. The tournament annually features the top field in all of college golf and is the only tournament UNLV hosts each year.
