LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 58th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team opened its 2014 home schedule with a 5-2 victory over New Mexico State Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels improved to 1-2 overall while the Aggies fell to 0-3.
UNLV had to rally after dropping the doubles point in the morning. The hosts' only win came at the top spot where Lucia Batta and Santa Shumilina doubled up Susana Alcaraz and Denise Van Der Ben 6-3.
Moving to singles play, Batta, ranked 29th in the nation, made quick work of Alcaraz at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1 to improve to 13-4 overall this season. UNLV also go points from Shumilina, 6-3, 6-4 over Van Der Ben at No. 3; Iren Kotseva, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) over Annemieke Witte at No. 5; and Kamelia Dimitrova, 7-6, 7-6 over Brittany Collens on court six.
However, the most impressive victory of the day came via UNLV senior standout Aleksandra Josifoska. Playing Ros-Polly Nguyen at the second spot, the defending Mountain West Conference Player of the Year trailed 6-2, 5-0 before making a gargantuan rally for the 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) win.
Next up, UNLV will host Pacific on Saturday. Doubles begin at 10 a.m. and admission is free of charge.
