LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team won its fourth straight match with a 7-0 blanking of Southern Utah Friday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels climbed above the .500 mark for the first time since late February, improving to 8-7 on the year, while the Thunderbirds fell to 0-6.
UNLV did not lose a set on the day, starting with a clean sweep in doubles play. Ace Matias and Denys Pume won 8-1 over Troy Benson and Blair Robbins at the top spot; Willie Sublette and Tamas Batyi shut out Alex Dial and Branden Olcott 8-0 at No. 2; and Jakob Amilon and Dimitar Petrov won 8-1 over Ammon Story and Mitchell John on court three. Moving to singles, Matias blanked Benson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; Pume downed Robbins 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2; Sublette defeated Dial 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3; Petrov whitewashed Story 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4; Amilon won by the same score over Olcott at No. 5; and Ozzy Abraham defeated John 6-2, 6-3 on court six.
Next up, UNLV will host NAU on Saturday beginning with doubles play at 11 a.m. Admission is free of charge.
