LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team won its sixth straight match and evened its conference mark at 1-1 with a 6-1 victory over Air Force on a beautiful Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels improved to 10-7 and 1-1 in the Mountain West while the Falcons fell to 12-5/0-2.
UNLV won a close doubles point by taking the rubber match in a tiebreaker. Ace Matias and Denys Pume won 8-3 over Alex Grubbs and Steven Young at the top spot before AFA took the match at No. 2. Dimitar Petrov and Jakob Amilon clinched it on court three by downing Grant Taylor and Lucas Fumaglli 8-7 (7-4).
In singles play, the top three Rebels quickly won straight-setters to clinch the match. Matias downed Young 6-1, 6-4 at the top spot; Pume got by Andy Jackson 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2; and Tamas Batyi defeated Alex Grubbs 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3.
The host's final two points came from Petrov, 6-1, 7-6 over Andrew Parks at No. 4, and Amilon, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 on court six.
"Air Force was a tough opponent, as always, and we had to really battle to get the doubles point, which was big for us," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "It was a successful weekend but now we have to get ready for a big match against Stanford."
The Rebels will host the Pac-12 Conference program on Wednesday beginning with doubles at 1 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
