SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team ended a frustrating road trip to California on Sunday with a 4-3 loss to Cal Poly at Mustang Courts.
The Rebels dropped to 4-6 on the year while the Mustangs improved to 4-8.
UNLV took a 1-0 lead by taking two of three doubles matches. Ozzy Abraham and Willie Sublette won 8-1 over Jurgen De Jager and Garrett Auproux on court three before Ace Matias and Denys Pume outlasted Marcuo Comuzzo and Matt Thompson 8-7 at the top spot by taking the tiebreaker 7-4.
In singles play, the visitors got points from Tamas Batyi at the third position, 6-3, 6-4 over Corey Pang, and Dimitar Petrov at the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-0 over Auproux. Cal Poly won straight-setters on courts 1, 2 and 4, which meant the match would be decided at the bottom of the lineup.
UNLV freshman Jakob Amilon split sets with his opponent before Neveen Beasley won it, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.
Next up, UNLV will host Utah at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Thursday beginning at 2 p.m. Admission to all home matches is free of charge.
