SUGAR GROVE, Ill. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot a second-round 21-over-par 309 on Friday and is in 10th place at the 2014 NCAA Sugar Grove Regional, which is being played at Rich Harvest Farms (par 72, 7,151 yards).
The second round started 2.5 hours late after a weather delay. Conditions were again wet and windy on Friday with temperatures in the 40s.
The top three teams all shot 4-over 292 during the second round. UAB leads the field at 8-over 584 for the tournament, followed by Illinois at 9-over and Clemson at 15-over. California is fourth at 17-over, while USC is fifth at 18-over. The fifth-seeded Rebels have a 36-hole total of 41-over 617.
Illinois' Brian Campbell remains the individual leader after a second-round 2-under 70. He is six shots ahead of the field at 5-under 139 for the tournament. There is an eight-way tie for second at 1-over.
UNLV sophomore Zane Thomas is the top Rebel as he is tied for 29th at 8-over 152 after a second-round 5-over 77. Junior Kurt Kitayama is tied for 33rd at 9-over after a second-round 5-over 77, juniors Carl Jonson and Nicholas Maruri are both tied for 41st at 12-over after shooting 6-over 78 and 5-over 77, respectively, while sophomore AJ McInerneyis tied for 58th at 16-over after a 7-over 79.
There are a total of six 54-hole regional tournaments. The Sugar Grove Regional consists of 14 teams and 75 individuals. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each of the regionals will advance to the NCAA Championship finals, which will be played May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. (hosted by Wichita State).
This year marks UNLV's 26th straight appearance in a NCAA Regional, which is the record for most consecutive appearances.
The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Saturday. UNLV is slated to begin the final round off the No. 10 hole with tee times scheduled from 8:25-9:09 a.m. CT with Cal State Fullerton and Mississippi State.
