May 18, 2014

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Even though the score was closer this time around, the final result was the same as the UNLV Athletics Department is again the winner of the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and sponsored by Barrick Gold.

With all points now spoken for, the Rebels won the all-encompassing competition with Nevada, Reno by the final score of 30 to 18. UNLV won last year's inaugural competition by the score of 37.5 to 10.5.

UNLV baseball's series sweep over UNR this weekend garnered three more points and Saturday's higher finish by the women's track and field team at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships in Laramie, Wyo., pushed the final three points into the Rebel column.

UNLV earned its other points in the 2013-14 season in the sports of football, women's soccer, women's volleyball, women's indoor track and field, women's basketball, softball, women's golf and men's golf.

UNR earned points in women's cross country, men's basketball, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis, men's tennis and from the academic component (APR).

"Congratulations to our student-athletes, coaches and staff in bringing home another Governor's Series trophy," UNLV Director of Athletics Tina Kunzer-Murphy said. "Every Rebel fan across the globe can take great pride in winning the first two years of this competition. As a graduate of UNLV, it makes it even more special that we can officially lay claim to having the top athletics department in the Silver State. We also want to thank NV Energy and Barrick Gold for their continued generosity in sponsoring the Governor's Series and look forward to next year's competition."
