July 8, 2014

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -

UNLV had a total of 52 student-athletes named as 2013-14 Scholar-Athlete Award recipients, the Mountain West announced on Tuesday. The 52 Rebels honored is the third-highest number in school history, trailing just the 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons during which 53 were named from the school. The announcement came one day after the league released its Spring 2014 Academic All-MW Team.

The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in a Mountain West-sponsored sport.

UNLV has had at least 43 recipients earn the award for seven straight academic years dating back to 2007-08. Since the MW began handing out the Scholar-Athlete Award nine years ago (2003-04), the Rebels have had 43 or more individuals recognized in nine of 11 years.

Leading the way for the Rebels was a trio of women's squads, as women's swimming had a school-high 12 athletes honored (third-highest in the league), the third straight year the team has reached has reached that mark, which is also a program-best. The women's soccer team had nine members (also third-highest in the MW) and the track and field team saw seven recognized.

Football, volleyball and women's tennis all had four honorees, while men's golf saw three of its members named. Rounding out the Rebel teams, women's basketball, baseball, women's golf and men's tennis all had two apiece while softball had one honoree.

Overall, a league-record 651 student-athletes were named Mountain West All-Scholar, including 50 with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
