LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Former UNLV men's basketball forward Khem Birch has signed with the NBA's Miami Heat, the team announced Sunday on its website. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Birch played in the 2014 NBA Summer League during July in Las Vegas for the Washington Wizards, where he averaged 5.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 19.3 minutes per game, while shooting 47.8 percent from the field. He led that squad in offensive rebounds and finished second in blocks, third in total rebounds and fourth in field-goals made, free-throws made and minutes. In a game against Miami, he score seven points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while making all three of his field-goal attempts and his only free-throw attempt.

At UNLV last season as a junior, Birch played in 33 games (32 starts) and averaged a double-double with 11.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. He led the Mountain West and was second in the nation in blocks with 3.8 per contest, shot 51 percent from the field (125-for-245), averaged 1.2 assists per game and played a team-high 31.4 minutes per outing.

His total of 124 blocks last year was second in the country and set the school's all-time seasonal record by 12. He finished his Runnin' Rebel career with 192 blocks, which was two shy of the UNLV all-time career mark. He also had 17 double-doubles during the season, which ranked eighth in the nation.

Birch shot 69.3 percent (131-for-189) from the free-throw line last season and was second on the team in scoring and second in rebounding (337 total rebounds was seventh in NCAA). In his two seasons as a Runnin' Rebel he was twice named the MW's Defensive Player of the Year and was a second-team all-conference selection last year after being named honorable mention as a sophomore.

Birch, originally from Montreal, Quebec, transferred to UNLV from Pittsburgh during the 2011-12 season. He became eligible to play for the Runnin' Rebels after the Fall 2012 semester after sitting out two semesters at UNLV.
