BERKELEY, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team won twice in singles and pushed two other matches to the limit before ultimately losing 5-2 to No. 12 California at the Hellman Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
The Rebels were playing their first dual match of the season while the Golden Bears already improved to 5-0.
Cal began the day by taking two completed doubles matches and grabbing the first team point.
In singles, the hosts won two easy ones to take a 3-1 lead before UNLV senior Ace Matias upset 93rd-ranked Filip Bergevi, 7-6, 6-3 to get his team on the board. Denys Pume and Jakob Amilon forced third sets but only Alexandr Cozbinov won his third-setter for the visitors, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, over Hasier Pastor.
"The guys gave a good account of themselves against the No. 12 team in the country today," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "It was our first one of the season so there is quite a bit to improve on and we have a quick turnaround tomorrow."
The Rebels will stay in the Bay Area and face No. 2 Stanford Saturday starting with doubles at 2 p.m. Live scoring and video is available at the website gostanford.com.
