LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's golf senior AJ McInerney captured the Las Vegas City Amateur title on Sunday with an 8-under-par 132.
The Las Vegas City Amateur is a major on the Southern Nevada Golf Association Tour.
McInerney fired rounds of 65 and 67 en route to the two-shot victory over Sam Dickey and Kenny Ebalo. Brady Exber and Justin Kim each tied for fourth place, four shots behind McInerney.
"I felt good all weekend and I pretty much avoided mistakes both days, other than one bad shot in the final round," McInerney said. "I made a double bogey on 15, but bounced right back with a birdie on 16 to seal the win."
McInerney also won the Nevada State Match Play Championship this past summer. In addition, he won the Las Vegas City Amateur in 2013. He sat out last year's tournament because of a back injury.
He credited being healthy to being a main reason for his recent solid play.
"It's been 5 months in a row since I have had any back pain and no back issues," McInerney said. "I have been able to work on my game and not worry about anything else so that has been very nice."
McInerney played high school golf at Coronado High School in Henderson where he helped lead the school to three state titles. He also won the individual title in 2010 and 2012. McInerney also won the Clark County Amateur, another SNGA major, as a 14-year old.
Former UNLV All-American Edward Fryatt finished in tie for sixth on Sunday, while UNLV junior Taylor Montgomery finished in a tie for eighth (70-69=139). UNLV recently finished its fall season at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational in Orlando, Fla. Sophomore John Oda will compete at the Sun Bowl Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic in El Paso, Texas, Nov. 6-8.
The Rebels will open the spring season as a team in February at the LMU Higgins Memorial Invitational at Reflection Bay in Las Vegas.
