LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's tennis team improved its record to 2-0 this season against teams from the Sunflower State with a 6-1 victory over Kansas State on Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebels, who also defeated Kansas earlier this month, improved to 2-4 overall while the Wildcats saw their three-match winning streak snapped in falling to 5-6 overall. UNLV also took a 4-2 lead in the all-time series with KSU in what was the first meeting since 1998.

UNLV opened the morning by taking two of three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Santa Shumilina and Paola Artiga downed Maria Panaite and Iva Bago 6-0 at the second position before KSU took the match at the top spot. Iren Kotseva and Alexis Garrett then earned the team point with a 6-3 win over Livia Cirnu and Laura Hopton at No. 3.

Moving to singles, the visitors tied things up with a win at No. 2. However, UNLV took the remaining five matches as Shumilina downed Carolina Costamanga 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) using a super-tiebreaker at No. 1; Kotseva rallied past Bago 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3; Artiga got by Cirnu 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4; Mercedes Lopez Valez finished off Maria Panaite 6-0, 7-6 at No. 5; and Garrett swept Tegan Louq 6-3, 6-3 on court six.

Head coach Kevin Cory's team will be back on the courts Sunday morning when they open Mountain West Conference play vs. Colorado State, starting with doubles, at 10 a.m. Admission is free of charge.
