LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's tennis team opened its Mountain West Conference schedule with a solid 6-1 victory over Colorado State on a gloomy Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels won back-to-back matches for the first time this season en route to improving to 3-4 overall while the Rams fell to 1-5.
The hosts opened the morning by taking two of three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Santa Shumilina and Paola Artiga got things started by downing Laia Hernandez Soler and Maddie Buxton 6-1 on court two. After CSU won at the top spot, Iren Kotseva and Alexis Garrett pulled out a 7-5 clincher on court three over Kwynn Ecton and Mollie Cooper.
In singles play, the visitors won at the top of the lineup but UNLV glided to the team win with five straight-set triumphs. Anett Ferenczi-Bako raced by Adriana Wojakowska 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2; Kotseva downed Laia Hernandez Soler 6-0, 7-5 at No. 3; Artiga downed Aina Hernandez Soler 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4; Mercedes Lopez Valez fought off Buxton 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5; and Garrett convincingly downed Ecton 6-1, 6-2 on court six.
Head coach Kevin Cory's team will be back on the courts Friday with a non-conference match versus Arizona of the Pac-12 Conference. Doubles will kick things off at 10 a.m. and admission is free of charge.
