LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's tennis team earned its first dual-match victory of the season Friday when it edged Kansas 4-3 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebels improved to 1-2 and 2-1 all-time against the Jayhawks, who fell to 0-3 on the young season.

UNLV opened the morning by taking two of three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Santa Shumilina and Iren Kotseva downed Smith Hinton and Madison Harrison 6-2 on court two while Mercedes Lopez Valez and Paola Artiga defeated Rachel McNeely and Summer Collins at the third position, 6-4, to clinch it for the hosts.

Moving to singles, KU took a 2-1 lead with wins on courts 2 and 3 before Shumilina tied it up with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Maria Jose Cardona at the top spot. Artiga got the next win for the hosts at No. 4, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, over Hinton. Alexis Garrett sealed it for the Rebels when she got by McNeely 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 on court six.

Head coach Kevin Cory's team will be right back on the courts Saturday morning when they host Pacific, starting with doubles, at 10 a.m. Admission is free of charge.
