LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team won its fifth straight match and for the ninth time in its last 11 outings, 4-0 over Idaho, on a warm and sunny spring Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels improved to 9-4 overall while the Vandals fell to 11-7.
UNLV swept three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Ace Matias and Adam Gage-Brown downed Jackson Varney and Cristobal Ramos, 6-2, at the top position; Ruben Alberts and Jakob Amilon got by Felipe Fonseca and Odon Barta, 6-4, at No. 2; and Alexandr Cozbinov and Denys Pume doubled up Mark Kovacs and Alberto Sanz, 6-3, on court three.
In singles, the teams agreed to stop when one side hit the clinching fourth point and the Rebels got there quickly with a trio of victories from the bottom half of the lineup. Gage-Brown downed Varney 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4; Cozbinov swept Kovacs 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5; and Alberts won when Sanz retired trailing 6-1, 5-4 on court six. The remaining matches were then halted.
Next up, the Rebels will travel to play No. 19 UCLA on Monday starting at 1 p.m.
