May 21, 2015 2015 NCAA West Preliminary - Qualifying List.
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Seven members of the UNLV track & field team have qualified for the 2015 NCAA Women's Outdoor Championships next week in Austin, Texas. The Rebel septet will head to the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium for the three-day meet that will run May 28-30.
Each of these seven qualifiers will be making their second trip to Texas' capital city and Mike A. Myers Stadium this season after they initially competed at the Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in late March.
"We are excited about the young women who will represent UNLV in Austin," said head coach Yvonne Wade. "Obviously, we had some setbacks this year that kept us from having a bigger group at the West Preliminary, but this group is young and they have worked hard this season and deserve it."
Drea Austin (Las Vegas/Foothill HS) will participate in both the 100m and 200m after she ran personal bests in both races at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships last week. Austin was fourth (11.63) in the 100m and fifth in the 200m (23.71), respectively.
Auzsane Crowe-Carter qualified for the 800m after she won the event for the second consecutive year at the Conference meet. Crowe-Carter is seeded 19th in the West Preliminary with a season-best time of 2:07.02 at the Stanford Invitational.
Taylor Pegram and Joniece Ervin will represent the Scarlet & Gray in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles, respectively. Pegram ran a season-best time of 13.67 at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational, while Ervin was fourth at the league meet in a personal-best 1:00.42.
Three more Rebels qualified for the postseason in field events. Krystal Wharton (Las Vegas/Valley HS), who finished 24th overall at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships, jumped a season-best distance of 19-9.75 (6.04m) at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational.
MacKenna Howard and Cortney Miller (Las Vegas/Calvary Chapel Christian HS) will throw for UNLV in Austin. Howard sits 29th in the West Preliminary in the shot put (51-6.5/15.71m: Texas Relays), while Miller is 32nd (195-6/59.58m: UNLV Spring Invitational).
The West Preliminary is one of two the NCAA will hold before its Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 10-13. The East Preliminary will also be contested May 28-30 in Jacksonville, Fla., at the University of North Florida.
