LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's golfer John Oda has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

The Honolulu, Hawaii native captured his second individual tournament title of the year and fourth of his career, earning medalist honors at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Alabama Oct. 3-4. The junior carded a three-round total of 7-under 203, using a tournament-low 6-under 64 final round to move up eight spots and secure the victory. The title moves Oda in a tie for fifth for all-time individual wins in program history. Oda's win also helped the then-No. 21 Rebels finish in second place as the team totaled a 1-over 841 for the tournament thanks to a 6-under 274 on the final day to finish just one shot back of tournament champion Auburn. The Rebels jumped up to No. 17 in the Golfweek rankings after finishing seventh or higher in all four tournaments this fall, which included one first-place finish.

While the team won't be competing again until February at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii, Oda -- who is ranked No. 24 nationally -- will compete in one more collegiate tournament this fall: the Sun Bowl Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic in November in El Paso, Texas.
