Nov. 2, 2016 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Women's Soccer senior Lily Sender has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Sender capped a stellar regular season last Friday, recording a hat trick in the 4-2 Governor's Series win over rival Nevada, Reno. The win clinched the program's first Mountain West Regular Season Championship since 2007 and the No. 1 seed in this week's conference tournament in San Diego. The hat trick was the program's first since 2010 and just the fifth time overall the feat has been accomplished. For her performance, Sender was honored as the league's Offensive Player of the Week, the Rebels' sixth weekly award of the season. The Honolulu, Hawaii, native led the team and the league in goals (14) and points (35) after recording just one goal and one assist in her previous three seasons. Her remarkable efforts were rewarded this week when she was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year, becoming the third Rebel in program history to earn the honor. The Mechanical Engineering major was also named to CoSIDA's Academic All-District Team this week for her work on the field and in the classroom.
Top-seeded UNLV will face Utah State in the first semifinal game of the Mountain West Tournament at 4 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck on Thursday, Nov. 3. The Rebels beat Utah State 1-0 in overtime on Oct. 23 on Senior Day at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
