Hammel Named Outstanding Rebel of the Week

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Volleyball redshirt senior Bree Hammel has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

After the Rebels reached the NCAA postseason for just the second time in program history thanks to an at-large bid, middle blocker Bree Hammel's strong performance helped UNLV to a 1-1 record in the first weekend of the tournament, including an upset of No. 22 Utah on Friday in Provo, Utah in the first round. In the two matches, the redshirt senior from Las Vegas registered 30 kills off .306 hitting, 18 digs, 11.0 blocks and three assists. In the 3-1 victory over Utah, she led the team with 18 kills and tied for the top spot in total blocks with seven (one solo), while adding eight digs and two assists to propel the Rebels to the second round. In Saturday's loss to No. 10 BYU, she had a double-double that consisted in team highs in both kills (12) and digs (10) in addition to four total blocks and one assist. Hammel had a stellar final season with the Rebels, which earned her Mountain West All-Conference honors and an AVCA All-Pacific South Honorable Mention selection.

While the loss to BYU ended UNLV's season, the 2016 campaign will go down as one of the best in program history.
