PROVO, UT (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team looked strong early, but could not earn enough points in a 4 -3 loss at the hands of No. 59 ranked BYU on Saturday afternoon in the beehive state.
The Rebels fell to 5-5, while the Cougars improved to 13-3.
UNLV began the day by sweeping two doubles matches for one point. Jakob Amilon and Ruben Alberts doubled up John Pearce and Jacob Sullivan 6-3 at the top position while Adam Gage-Brown and Evaldo Neto outlasted Keaton Cullimore and Shane Monroe 7-5 at the second position.
Moving to singles, the Rebels kept the score close; however, the Cougars got two straight-set wins and then rallied for victories at the top and bottom of the lineup.
Alberts tied the match up at 2 after downing Andrey Goryachkov 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4. The third point scored for the Rebels was by Alexandr Cozbinov, who tied the match once again at 3 after defeating Cullimore 7-6, 6-2 at No. 2. The Cougars took the only three-setter of the day on court six to clinch it.
Next up, UNLV will return to the Fertitta Tennis Complex to host a trio of matches against No. 5 ranked UCLA, No. 56 ranked conference opponent New Mexico, and Montana. Admission to all UNLV home matches is free of charge.
