LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The fourth-seeded UNLV men's tennis team punched their ticket to the Mountain West Men's Tennis Championship semifinals with a 4-2 victory over fifth-seeded and 64th ranked New Mexico on Friday evening at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The Rebels, who will be making their first appearance in the semifinals since 2013, improved to 13-9 on the season, while the Lobos wrapped up the 2016 campaign at 15-16.
The Lobos secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions. The lone point scored for the Rebels was at the bottom of the lineup where Alexandr Cozbinov and Richard Solberg downed Michael Tran and Rodolfo Jauregui 6-2.
Moving to singles, New Mexico quickly took a 2-0 advantage; however, that was the only singles point scored for the Lobos as UNLV would reel off four straight victories at the No. 3, 6, 2 and 1 positions. Sophomore all-conference member Ruben Alberts would get things started for the Rebels at the No. 3 position, beating Jorge Escutia in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. UNLV evened up the contest with a win from Solberg over Tran, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6.The hosts then clinched the match victory thanks to a pair of come-from-behind, three-set wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. After dropping the first set to Hayden Sabatka, 4-6, all-conference Cozbinov bounced back to win the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-4. Just like Cozbinov, all-conference teammate Jakob Amilon dropped his first set at the No. 1 spot to Van Leijsen, 5-7. However, Amilon rallied to win set two, 6-3, and the third set, 6-4, to advance UNLV to the semifinals.
