LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's golf sophomores Shintaro Ban and John Oda have both been named to the PING All-West Region team as the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) handed out its annual awards on Sunday.
Both players were also honored as members of the All-Mountain West Team last month after leading the squad to the league title. This all-region honor marks the second of Oda's career as he also was named to the West's squad last year, while this is the first for Ban.
Ban, from San Jose, Calif., was third on the team in scoring average this past season, with 72.65 strokes per round. He competed in 12 tournaments, playing in 34 rounds. He scored in the 60s on five occasions and had 15 rounds at par or better. His best finish was a tie for first at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio, and had a total of five top-10 finishes.
Oda, from Honolulu, Hawaii, led UNLV in scoring average at 71.63. He appeared in 13 tournaments for the Rebels, playing 38 rounds. He scored in the 60s eight times and had 23 rounds at par or better. His best finish was a tie for first at the LMU Invitational, which was played at Lake Las Vegas, and he had a total of six top-10 finishes including a team-best tie for eighth at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional.
A total of 156 players were named all-region across six regions: Northeast, East, Southeast, Midwest, Central and West. The full GCAA release may be found here.
