LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Women's Basketball guard Brooke Johnson has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Johnson, a Hanford, Calif. native, was key in leading UNLV to a 58-55 road upset at BYU and a 55-53 home overtime win over Utah State last week, scoring 38 points to go along with 11 rebounds, five assists and seven steals in the two victories. The Broncos entered the game as co-leaders of the Mountain West with a 12-1 mark, but Johnson's hot shooting and the team's strong defense gave the Lady Rebels one of their biggest victories of the year. Johnson went 6-of-9 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free throw line for a team-high 20 points, marking the second time this season she has scored 20 or more points in a game. In an intense battle against Utah State, Johnson turned in another stellar performance to help UNLV to another hard-fought win, pouring in 18 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals against the Aggies. Two of the four steals came in the final 20 seconds of the game, the first leading to the go-ahead basket and the second to seal the game.
With the two conference victories, UNLV moved to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in Mountain West play. The Lady Rebels return to action tonight as they take on New Mexico at Cox Pavilion at 6 p.m.
