GOODYEAR, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's and women's swimming teams split a double-dual meet with Grand Canyon and Cal Baptist on Saturday afternoon in a meet hosted by GCU at the Southwest Valley Family YMCA in Goodyear, Ariz.
The Rebel men came out with the win over Cal Baptist 181-177, but were defeated by Grand Canyon 170-121. On the women's side, UNLV toppled Cal Baptist 201-98, while the Antelopes women came out on top 162-137.
"This was a tough meet against a tough WAC competitor," said UNLV head coach Ben Loorz. "Of course we would have loved to have won this match-up, but unfortunately lost a few key races early on that put us behind. Our men's sprinting was excellent today, with Kasey Foley and Or Sabatier leading the way. We had Dylan Tarazona back in the saddle this week, swimming well, and we posted several excellent relay splits."
On the men's side, the Rebels dominated the freestyle events with newcomer Jan Kutnik being the top performer for UNLV, pinning down both distance events in his first meet on the squad. Kutnik, who is a distance specialist from the Czech Republic, was put to use in both the 1000 free (9:31.67) and the 500 free (4:35.20) hammering from behind to take the wins.
The men's other first place swim came from Or Sabatier in the 100 free (45.59), while Kasey Foley claimed second overall with a time of 45.96. Foley also finished first in the 50 free (20.25).
On the women's side against both teams, the Rebels won six events. Kristina Hendrick claimed a victory in the 100 and 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.89 and 2:19.78, respectively, for two wins on the afternoon. Gozde Tekin and Kimberly Hendrick went one-two in the 200 butterfly with times of 2:06.44 and 2:08.67. UNLV also placed first in the fifth event of the day thanks to Ida Schutt's time of 1:54.98 in the 200 freestyle.
"Our women were strong today but we just didn't have enough "W's" to carry the day," said Loorz. "We turned in a good racing day thought, racking up lots of second and third place finishes against Grand Canyon, and to a full set of wins and a clear victory over CBU."
Other wins came from Mykala Fielding on the 1m board with a score of 246.55 and Alyssa Arnett on the 3m with a score of 254.55.
UNLV is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 10 am at CSU Bakersfield.
