Thing 1's Big Inning Secures Series Win

Nov. 16, 2017

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Thing 1 used a seven-run outburst for the second time in as many games to distance itself from Thing 2 en route to a 9-2 victory in game two of UNLV baseball's Fall World Series held at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. With the score tied at 1-all entering the home half of the fourth, Thing 1 broke the game open with three straight run-scoring hits after its first two batters had reached base safely.

Thing 1 and Thing 2 matched each other run for run in all but one inning of Thursday's contest. Both sides pushed across runs in the third and sixth inning; however, the fourth was the difference maker.

Zach Kaminkow broke the 1-all stalemate with an RBI single in the fourth, which was followed by an RBI double from Seth Mullis and an RBI single by Corey Wilson. Later in the frame, Michael Macove and Caleb Summerhays knocked in two RBI apiece.

Thing 2 scored its runs off a pair of solo home runs from Kyle Isbel and Austin Anderson â€" his second of the series â€" in the third and sixth innings, respectively.

Thing 1's first run was off a double play in the third, while its last was off an RBI double by Max Smith in the sixth.

THE TURNING POINT: A four-pitch walk issued to Max Smith and four straight hits started Thing 1's fourth-inning onslaught, which was a result of six hits and three walks, two of the intentional variety.

STAT OF THE GAME: Thing 1's offense registered 12 hits, 11 of which were from eight of its nine starters in the lineup. The 6-7-8 batters accounted for half of Thing 1's hits, as Summerhays, Grant Robbins and Mullis had two each.

STAT OF THE GAME, PART TWO: Thing 1 had nine different players score a run in the game with eight of those also credited with at least one RBI, with Summerhays and Macove plating two each.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Summerhays factored in three runs for Thing 1 with two RBI and one run off a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.

QUOTABLE: "It was good to go out and put up some more runs today, which makes it a lost easier on out pitchers," said Thing 1 co-head coach Bryson Stott. "We had some key pinch-hits and that was huge for our rally. We're going for the sweep tomorrow!"

Stott's cohort, Nick Ames, noted, "I thought we played hard today and showed up offensively again. Our pitching has been great in keeping the other team to limited runs. I think the biggest take away is our team energy in the dugout. It is electric in there. I'm glad we got a win today and locked the World Series up."

REBEL NOTES:
*Thing 1's Christian Myers was credited with the win in one inning of scoreless relief in the fourth.
*Thing 2's Chris Joaquim was saddled with the loss in only 0.1 innings of relief, as he was on the hook for seven runs.
*Both starting pitchers, Thing 1's Conner Woods and Thing 2's Trevor Horn, went three innings and had nearly identical stat lines with each allowing one run and striking out two against one walk. The only difference was that Woods surrendered one less hit (2-3) than Horn.

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: The third and final game of UNLV's Fall World Series will take place Friday morning at Wilson Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 9:20 am.
