McCoy Named Outstanding Rebel Of The Week

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's basketball freshman Brandon McCoy has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday. This is the second time in three weeks the standout freshman has earned the honor.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

McCoy, from Chicago, Illinois, helped the Runnin' Rebels to three victories last week with wins over Rice (95-68), Utah (85-58) and Southern Utah (101-82). The freshman recorded three double-doubles and averaged 21.3 points, 13.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game, while shooting 61.1 percent from the field and 90.9 percent from the free-throw line.

Against Rice, McCoy poured in a game-high 23 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field and was 9 of 10 from the charity stripe. He also pulled down 10 rebounds in just 23 minutes of action. In the MGM Resorts Main Event Championship game against Utah, he posted a career-best 26 points and a game-high 17 rebounds on 9 of 14 shooting from from the field and a perfect 8 of 8 shooting from the free-throw line en route to being named the tournament's MVP. In Saturday's win against Southern Utah, McCoy added 15 points and 14 rebounds to go along with a career-high and game-high six blocks.

The Runnin' Rebels are back in action tonight at Northern Iowa at 5 p.m. PT before they return home to the Thomas & Mack Center Saturday for a tilt against Pac-12 powerhouse Arizona at 7 p.m.
