DAY ONE RESULTS // TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Women's Golf didn't show much rust in the team's first action since early November, ending round one in fifth place with an 8-over 292 team score on the day. The Rebels turned in a strong performance amongst a tough field that features 12 ranked teams out of the 15 total competing in the three-day event, including four teams ranked in Golfstat's Top-10. The 8-over matched the team's best first round score of the 2016-17 season.
Leading the way was junior Mackenzie Raim and senior Alexandra Kaui, who each carded a 1-over 72 to end round one in a tie for 15th. Kaui registered a team-high five birdies against four bogies, while Raim dropped in three birdies on the back nine after four bogies on the front nine. Sophomore Elizabeth Prior was right behind them, shooting a 2-over 73 to tie for 20th. Junior Harley Dubsky finished the day in a tie for 43rd after scoring a 4-over 75 with sophomore Alyssa Getty rounding it out with a 6-over 77, good for a tie for 65th.
Head coach Amy Bush-Herzer was extremely pleased with her team's performance on day one. "It was an awesome day for them," she said. "They've been working really hard and it was great to see that hard work pay off."
Only one team finished below par on the challenging course -- round one leader and seventh-ranked UCLA -- who shot a 4-under 280 to take a five stroke lead into day two. Second-ranked USC came in behind the Bruins at 1-over 285, followed by No. 22 Duke in third (3-over 287) and No. 6 Florida in fourth (6-over 290) just two strokes ahead of the Rebels.
USC's Robynn Ree and Duke's Leona Maguire carded the top rounds of the day, each scoring a 3-under 68 to sit in a tie for first place. Four players finished a stroke behind Ree and Maguire and five others finished two strokes off the lead, so the race for the individual medalist honor will be a tight one over the final two rounds.
The Rebels will tee off Monday morning for round two at 9:12 a.m., playing in a group with No. 3 Alabama, No. 25 Arizona and No. 14 Arizona State.
Live scoring will again be available here.
