Men's Tennis Splits Doubleheader

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team split a doubleheader losing their first conference matchup to Boise State 4-3 in the morning affair and defeated Idaho State 4-1 in the afternoon slate Tuesday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

In the morning affair, the Rebels fell to 9-4, 0-1 overall in conference while the Broncos improved to 3-16, winning their first conference match of the season.

The morning would begin with doubles play as Jakob Amilon and Evaldo Neto beat Pedro Platzeck and Brian Tran 6-3. After Boise State won 6-4 on court two, court three would see Richard Solberg and Adam Gage-Brown battle it out with Kyle Butters and Ryland McDermott, ultimately losing 7-6 (0) giving Boise State the team point.

In singles, the Rebels won three matches, but it wasn't enough as the Broncos also won three matches to secure the win. UNLV's trio of wins came from Amilon edging by Butters 6-4, 7-6 (2) at No. 1; Courtney Lock defeating Morgan Stone 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5; and Solberg beating Greg Wischer 6-1, 6-1 on court six.

The afternoon slate saw the Scarlet & Gray improve to 10-4 taking down the Bengals 4-1, dropping their record to 6-6.

In doubles play, the Rebels saw similar outcomes as they did in the morning match. Jakob Amilon and Evaldo Neto won their second doubles match of the day downing Sebastian Edin and Josh Goodwin 6-1. After Idaho State won 6-4 on court two, Richard Solberg and Adam Gage-Brown forced a tiebreaker, but fell to Quentin Wacquez and Francis Filipovich 7-6 (5), giving Idaho State the team point.

In singles, the hosts recorded four wins to secure their 10th win of the season. Alexandr Cozbinov defeated Wacquez 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2; Lock won his second singles match of the day downing Filipovich 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4; Solberg too won his second singles contest of the day blanking Bjorn Scheepbouwer 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5; and Charlie Croxford finished off Haseeb Khan 6-2, 6-3 on court six.

Next up, the Rebels will travel to the Lone Star State for the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas and are set for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 25 against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 9 a.m. PT followed by Rice at 3 p.m. PT at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. The invitational will conclude with the Rebels facing Denver on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT.
