HOUSTON, Texas (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team split a doubleheader, blanking Texas A&M Corpus Christi 4-0 in the morning before falling to 37th-ranked Rice 4-1 in the afternoon slate Saturday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
In the morning affair, the Rebels improved to 11-4 overall in while the Islanders fell to 11-5, ending their six game winning streak.
UNLV won two out of three doubles matches to secure the team point. Jakob Amilon and Evaldo Neto defeated Kevin Bettendroffer and William Mottet 6-4 at No. 1, while Ruben Alberts and Adam Gage-Brown beat Cagatay Soke and Lukas Buth 6-4 on court two.
In singles, the Rebels took three matches to capture the win. Amilon defeated Bettendroffer 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1; Alexandr Cozbinov downed Soke 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2; and Richard Solberg finished off Bath 6-3, 6-2 on court six.
The afternoon contest saw the Scarlet & Gray fall to 11-4 while the host Owls improved to 18-5.
In doubles play, the Rebels won two out of three doubles matches to secure the team point. Amilon and Neto won their second doubles match of the day by beating David Warren and Oscar Janglin 6-4 at No. 1, while Cozbinov and Lock defeated Jake Hansen and Eric Rutledge 6-4 on court three.
Two Rebels won a set in singles play but the Owls secured the over victory before those matches were completed.
The Rebels will conclude the Rice Invitational with a dual match against Denver Sunday at 10 a.m. PT.
