ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team emerged on the road with its fourth consecutive win on Friday, 4-2 over New Mexico at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium.
The Rebels improved to 15-7 overall and 3-2 in Mountain West Conference play while the Lobos fell to 10-11 and 3-2 in conference play.
UNLV forged a key 1-0 lead by taking two out of three doubles matches. Jakob Amilon and Evaldo Neto blanked Lawrence Perrin and Ricky Hernandez 6-0 at the top position while Richard Solberg and Alexandr Cozbinov beat Sean Baklini and Rodolfo Jauregui in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2), on court three to clinch it.
Moving to singles play, UNLV won three matches to secure the win. Amilon defeated Van Leijsen 6-1, 7-6 (8), at the top of the lineup; Ruben Alberts beat beat Perrin 7-6 (2), 6-3 at No. 4; and Alexandr Cozbinov rallied to finish off Ricky Hernandez-Tong 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on court two.
"I'm very proud of the guys today against a tough New mexico team," said head coach Owen Hambrook. "With the crowd against him, Alex came through for us to clinch it."
UNLV will continue league play on the road Sunday against Air Force at 11 a.m. PT.
