LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Track and Field junior Destiny Smith-Barnett has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Smith-Barnett, a junior from Oakland, Calif., took first in all three events she competed in at the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track & Angell Field on Stanford's campus last weekend. She finished first in both her 100 meter preliminary race and in the 100 meter finals, with her winning time of 11.22w clocking in as the second-fastest outdoor time in the event in program history. Her 100 finals time was also good for second in the Mountain West, fourth in the West Regional and sixth in the NCAA rankings. In winning the 200 meter, Smith-Barnett recorded a personal-best time of 23.50 to move to the top of the Mountain West rankings in the event this year. She completed her stellar weekend with a win in the 4X100 meter relay as Smith-Barnett and teammates Ayana Gales, Najia Hudspeth and Drea Austin turned in a time of 45.03 to take first.
