LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's golfer John Oda was named a PING First Team All-America honoree earlier this week at the NCAA Championship in Sugar Grove, Ill., the Golf Coaches Association of America announced. Oda is UNLV's first First Team All-America recipient since Ryan Moore in 2005.
This is Oda's third All-America honor of his career as he was twice named honorable mention (2015 and 2016). The Rebels have now had a player earn All-America recognition in 26 of the last 29 years.
Oda, junior Shintaro Ban and sophomore Harry Hall, were also recently named to the PING All-West Region Team.
Oda, who is from Honolulu, Hawaii, also was this year's Mountain West Golfer of the Year. He led the No. 15 Rebels to an Elite Eight finish at the NCAA Championship, where he was UNLV's top individual stroke-play finisher, tying for eighth. In the quarterfinals (match play), he defeated his opponent by a dominant score of 6 & 5.
Oda led the Rebels in scoring average this season with 70.43 strokes per round in a total of 15 tournaments. He won two individual titles and recorded 12 top-10 finishes, including in each of his last nine events. He shot par or better in 31 of 46 total rounds played and was in the 60s 19 times.
