LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV baseball's Scarlet & Gray World Series got off to an exciting start Thursday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, with Scarlet's come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Gray. The Scarlet got a two-out, RBI single from Jake McLean to cap a three-run sixth inning that erased a two-run lead Gray had held since the second inning.
Joshua Harmonay and
Max Smith got the Scarlet rally started with a single and a double, respectively, off Gray reliever Bradley Spooner to put runners on the corners.
Vince Taormina and Edarian Williams were able to tie the contest at 2-all when they reached base safely and brought in one run apiece via a fielding error and an RBI single, while McLean's heroics occurred four batters later with a full count.
Gray had staked itself to a two-run lead in the second inning off run-scoring hits from James Gamble and Garrett Giles. Duke Pahukoa led off with a double and came around to score two batters later off Gamble's double, while the latter crossed the plate off Giles' single.
STAT OF THE GAME: Scarlet's offense had been limited to only one hit through the first five innings of the game; however, the squad scattered four hits in the sixth.
REBEL OF THE GAME: McLean went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a walk, and one RBI Thursday. Not only did he produce the game-winning hit, but his single in the fifth broke up Gray's no-hit bid.
REBEL NOTES:
- Scarlet's Haydn King earned the win after throwing a scoreless fifth inning, with three strikeouts against one hit.
- King and fellow pitchers Matt Mitchell and
Conner Woods combined to strike out seven batters and limit Gray to two runs off seven hits and one walk.
- Spooner was the losing pitcher after he allowed three runs (two earned) off of four hits, with one strikeout against one walk.
- Gray's used a total of four pitchers that struck out seven and allowed three runs (two earned) off of five hits and three walks.
