Sophomore quarterback Armani Rogers earns honor after leading the Rebels to a historic comeback win over UNR
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -Â UNLV football sophomore quarterback Armani Rogers has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week, the school announced Wednesday. This is the second time this fall Rogers has earned the honor.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Rogers, from Los Angeles, California, made his first start since suffering an injury on September 22 and led the Rebels to their largest comeback victory in program history, 34-29, over in-state rival UNR Saturday night. Rogers was responsible for five touchdowns in the win - two rushing and three passing - including the game-winner with 2:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.
With his team trailing 23-0, Rogers faced a fourth-and-eight when he scrambled to find running back Lexington Thomas out of the backfield that turned into a 38-yard touchdown. Less than 90 seconds later, Rogers threw an 18-yard scoring pass to tight end Giovanni Fauolo to make it 23-14 Wolf Pack. Later in the second quarter, Rogers made it 21 straight points for the Rebels by pushing into the end zone from one yard out. In the third quarter, UNLV took its first lead of the game when Rogers rolled out and threw a one-yard TD to tight end Noah Bean, making it 28-26 in favor of the home team. After the Pack regained the lead, Rogers took over, completing passes of 12 and then 28 yards and rushing for 3 and then 6 yards to put UNLV on the doorstep before running it into the end zone from three yards out for the winning points with just 2:34 left in the game.Â
It marked the second time in his career that Rogers, who completed passes to eight different targets, threw three touchdowns in a game as UNLV defeated UNR at home for the first time since 2004.Â
